When Is the Best Time to Visit Sardinia?

The best time to visit Sardinia depends on how you like to travel. Spring and autumn are appealing for village visits and days outdoors; summer brings the fullest beach atmosphere. Here is how to choose the season that suits your journey.

Spring: villages, landscapes and room to explore

From April into June, longer days and fresh countryside make spring a rewarding time to combine coastal views with inland towns, local food and gentle walks. The sea can still feel cool, especially earlier in the season, and weather varies across the island. Pack layers for evenings and mountain visits.

It is a lovely season for a varied itinerary: start in Cagliari, explore the traditions of Carloforte and continue towards Ogliastra and Gallura. Our 10-day Sardinia small group tour includes scheduled departures in May and June 2027.

Summer: the sea takes centre stage

July and August are popular for warm-weather holidays, swimming and time by the water. They also bring hotter afternoons and greater demand in coastal areas. If summer is your preferred season, plan well ahead for accommodation, ferries, guides and any boat outings.

We like to balance beach time with early visits, a long lunch and space to rest in the afternoon. Boat routes and swimming stops depend on sea conditions and local rules.

Autumn: a gentler pace

September and October can offer a pleasant balance of coast, food and cultural encounters, with the sea often retaining summer warmth. Days become shorter and weather becomes more variable as autumn progresses; swimming and sailing are never guaranteed.

Our 2027 small group itinerary also has September and October departures. For a more personal rhythm, the private Sardinia longevity journey pairs Ogliastra’s villages and food traditions with time on the coast.

Winter: culture beyond the beach

Winter is quieter and better suited to travellers interested in cities, food, local traditions and the island’s interior than a beach-centred trip. Some coastal hotels, restaurants and seasonal excursions may have reduced schedules or close, so we check each experience for the dates requested.

How many days should you spend in Sardinia?

A week can work beautifully when you focus on one region or two nearby bases. With ten days, there is more room to combine the south, Ogliastra and the north without turning every day into a transfer. The right pace depends on your flights, interests, mobility and how much time you want to spend by the sea.

Private journey or small group?

Choose a private journey for flexibility around dates and interests. A scheduled small group offers a shared experience with a dedicated host and a defined route. Both can include local encounters and time to enjoy Sardinia beyond the beaches.
